Jaundice is defined by the appearance of yellowness in the eyes and skin. In Ayurveda it is known as a kamala. It is caused by excessive circulation of bile pigments (pitta) in the blood. Liver is responsible for the production of pitta. If there is any obstruction of the bile duct, or any problems in the faction of the liver, or excessive damage of the red blood cells, then the pitta appears excess in the blood. Usually it comes out of the body through urine and stool. If any obstruction in the bile ducts, then it does not come out through bowels. Normal stool its color because of the bile and is an obstruction in the bile duct then the stool colour becomes white.
The colour of urine continues to be excessively yellow in all types of jaundice.
Except for yellowness of the eyes and the skin many other symptoms are appear upon the case of the jaundice. There may be itching all over the body. Abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, vomiting are also some important symptoms of jaundice. Destruction of the red blood cells, and circulation of bile pigments is more quantity result in the deficiency of the oxidation of the tissue cells resulting in defective metabolism and associated complains. There are three types of jaundice. One, Hepatocellular jaundice: result of liver disease or injury. Second, hemolytic jaundice: result of enhanced breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis) reason to an increase in production of bilirubin. And third, Obstruction jaundice: result of an obstruction in the bile duct, which prevents bilirubin from leaving the liver.
Bhumi amalaki, Kumari, Bhringaraja, Pippali, guduchi, punarnava, patola, daruharidra are useful ayurvedic herbs for jaundice. Arogyavardhini Vati, Kumaryasava also uaeful in jaundice.
