An Inflammation and irritation of the lining of the stomach is known as gastritis. Gastritis is of several types depending upon the nature of the inflammation, the condition of the mucous membrane and glands. The glands of the stomach secrete hydrochloric acid and some other digestive enzymes. Inflammation of the stomach results damage of these secretions leading to indigestion. In Ayurveda, this is known as urdhvaga amlapitta.

Irregularity in diet, anger, anxiety, intake of excessive alcohol, chilies and spices, chronic vomiting, some medicines such as aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs, H. Pylori bacterium infection, bile reflux and worry specially during time of taking food are responsible for the gastritis.

The patient experiences acid eructation with a burning sensation in the chest. The patient feels weak and irritable. Pain in the upper part of the abdomen which is sometimes worse immediately after taking food, or even when the stomach is empty. The patient may also suffer from nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, indigestion, giddiness, loss of appetite and headache. Patients who are suffering from chronic gastritis become anemic and emaciated. and their combined form and the fifth type is known yoshapasmara or hysteria.

Sukumara ghrita, Dhatri Lauha, Avipattikara Churan, Amla Churan are very useful ayurvedic formulation for gastritis.
